Before we get into the details of the top blackhead removers to shop online, it’s vital to understand what these pesky bumps are in the first place.
What Are Blackheads?
“Blackheads are comedones (AKA pore blockages) that are open to the air,” board-certified dermatologist Dr. Angelo Landriscina tells WWD. “The contents on the surface can become oxidized, leading to their dark color. Closed comedones, on the other hand, do not undergo oxidation — these are commonly referred to as whiteheads.”
Unfortunately, blackheads are a universal phenomenon, despite those with oily and acne-prone skin experiencing them most often.
What Causes Blackheads?
“Blackheads are caused when there is a buildup of excess oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and bacteria in the pore,” says Joie Tavernise, celebrity esthetician and founder of JTAV Clinical Skincare. “This can happen due to a number of reasons, including an accumulation of dead skin cells from lack of exfoliation, hormonal changes, predisposition due to genetics, environmental pollutants, and certain cosmetics.”

How to Get Rid of Blackheads
A majority of skin care professionals, including Dr. Landriscina, advise tackling blackheads with targeted spot treatments or acne serums backed by ingredients like salicylic acid, so as to prevent possible damage from physical tools. That being said, there are some devices, like pore vacuums and spatulas, that are safe for at-home use when handled correctly.
Pro tip from Dr. Kiran Mian, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City: Those who decide to go the gadget route should prep their skin beforehand. She suggests steaming your face to soften the skin around the blackheads before going in with a tool. “Once the skin is softened, after about five minutes, you can gently cleanse with a salicylic acid cleanser and lukewarm water,” Dr. Mian adds. “Then you can go in with your sterilized extractor.”
Our editorial team tested over 20 blackhead removal tools for consideration in this piece. The below 12 are the crème de la crème selections that made the cut based on efficacy, ease of use, friendliness to sensitive skin, and other key factors.
Gunky pores? Haven’t heard of them.
best mask
Medicube Zero Pore Blackhead Mud Mask
$18.90
K-beauty darling Medicube is not all pore pads and pink peptide serums. The skin care leader has also come out with a blackhead-addressing mud mask that’s been bought over 30,000 times on Amazon in the past month alone: no small achievement.
Why so many beauty insiders consider themselves obsessives? The cooling, tightening, and quick-drying formula combines the most powerful chemical exfoliating acids in one 100-gram package, allowing you to dissolve dead skin cells without scrubbing. Natural clays here, meanwhile, draw out impurities, whisk away oil, and even remedy dullness.
Users report feeling their skin temperature drop within minutes of introducing this product to their face. No wonder it boasts hundreds of five-star reviews and is called “unbelievable” in many of them.
What reviewers say: “I started using the Medicube Zero Pore Blackhead Mud Mask after looking for something that could improve the appearance of my pores and overall skin clarity, especially in the T-zone area. Being in my 50s, enlarged pores have been something I’ve dealt with for years, so I’m very selective about what I add into my skin care routine. What stood out with this mask is how effective it feels right away. After putting it on, my skin feels clean, soft, and noticeably less oily.”

another option
JVR Peel-Off Blackhead Face Mask
$13.99 $15.99 13% off
Like the above face mask for blackheads, this Amazon hit has been purchased thousands of times (specifically, over 4,000) in the past month, and now-blackhead-free customers can’t stop giving it five-star ratings. The simple reason for the hype? JVR’s Peel-Off Blackhead Face Mask for men and women doles out visible results in as little as a few applications, lifting off those annoying black dots, smoothing the skin underneath, and drying up any excess oiliness.
The culprit behind all this is activated charcoal, which does its best work when coming into contact with the face’s T-zone. Also infused with a variety of fruit and plant extracts that leave hydration in their wake, the product benefits from a coconut aroma that will have you reaching for it religiously.
What reviewers say: “This stuff works well! It’s like a tar that goes on your face and dries quickly. I didn’t just buy this for my nose but for the entire face, as for some reason I keep getting blackheads/clogged pores all over. I got immediate results. Not perfect, but I could tell the impurities were mostly gone. Product smelled great. My face looks cleaner, and it’s so smooth! Very happy, and I have sensitive skin too.”

best vacuum
Foreo Kiwi Blackhead Remover Device
$129
A few years old by now, Foreo’s Kiwi innovation remains a crowd favorite — prized for its ability to suction out blackheads, whiteheads, and trapped oil alike while banishing breakout-causing bacteria by emitting blue LED light. The work it does is gentle, and yet the Kiwi Blackhead Remover leaves no stone unturned when it comes to “trimming” impurities at the root.
According to the Swedish beauty tech giant, the device also “allows enlarged pores to shrink back to their regular size” and paves the way for your go-to products to “penetrate deeper into skin.” We see no flaws, a sentiment that will soon apply to your T-zone.
What reviewers say: “So happy with this, it’s brilliant! I use the Kiwi up to two times a week after cleansing to get rid of the little black dots on my cheeks, nose, and chin. It’s gentle, which is something I was initially apprehensive about. I also appreciate how the tool has blue LED light to further sanitize the areas being treated.”

another option
Freeshow Blackhead Remover Vacuum
$49.99
Meet Freeshow’s Blackhead Remover Vacuum, sold at less than half the price of the just-mentioned Foreo alternative while being no less potent. We like that buying it on Amazon gives you access to a comprehensive range of blackhead tools, from exfoliating suction probes to stainless steel scrapers for getting deep in there without harming the skin. The vac itself has five suction levels tailored to your desired intensity, and you can track everything with the central LED display.
The offering is so good at what it does, you’ll soon notice a reduction in dead skin, whiteheads, pimples, and cosmetic residue for good measure. The vacuum’s battery life gets you multiple uses off a single charge, and its USB-compatible status is another reason to click “add to cart.”
What reviewers say: “I recently purchased this vacuum blackhead remover, and it has been a game changer for my skin care routine! The device is sleek, lightweight, and USB rechargeable, making it super convenient for travel and everyday use. It comes with multiple suction levels, allowing me to adjust based on my skin’s sensitivity. The suction power is impressive — gentle yet effective. It easily removes blackheads, whiteheads, and even clears clogged pores without causing irritation or redness. The different attachments included are great for targeting various areas of the face. I especially love the larger nozzle for my T-zone and the smaller one for precision around the nose. What sets this apart is how easy it is to clean after use. Plus, the battery life is excellent — I’ve used it multiple times on a single charge. My skin feels smoother, clearer, and healthier after every session.”

best steamer
Pure Daily Care NanoSteamer 3-in-1 Nano Ionic Facial Steamer
$39.95
Remember how we urged to always open up your pores by way of steam before so much as looking at a blackhead removal tool? Here’s a standout option for doing just that: a facial steamer that generates negatively charged ionic particles, letting all that moisture seep into skin on a much more nitty-gritty level.
You’ll get 30 minutes of uninterrupted — and most importantly silent — runtime with this baby, which can also moonlight as a towel warmer or room humidifier. What we adore most is the fact that the Pure Daily Care bestseller is accompanied by a five-piece blemish extractor kit, composed of everything you need to really get in there without hurting yourself.
Shop now at Macy’s, and start enjoying the technology’s benefits in just five to eight business days.
What reviewers say: “If you’re craving a facial but don’t want to spend lots of money, I truly recommend the Nano Ionic Facial Steamer. It helps unclog pores and get rid of dead skin but can also be used as a dehumidifier.”

best affordable tool
Spa Sciences Lela 4-in-1 Facial Spatula
$29.98
Meet Spa Sciences’ Lela, a multifunctional, overachieving instrument that taps high-frequency vibrations to, quite literally, evict blackheads from your face in a pain-free way. Its positive and negative ion technology also comes in handy, attracting particles that your cleansers and even exfoliants can’t reach.
Four distinct treatment modes offer customization based on your unique skin needs, and more perks come in the form of the Spa Sciences Lela 4-in-1 Facial Spatula working sans cords — turning it into a travel nonnegotiable.
Editor testing and review notes: “I’m usually partial to chemical blackhead removers versus tools, but this one is a winning option for folks who want to manually clear out their skin. It has subtle vibration to it that cleans my pores without turning my skin red after use, and the design is ultra-portable as well as lightweight. I could visibly see congestion being lifted during the treatment, and my skin felt significantly smoother once I finished. It’s a professional-level deep clean without being harsh or overly aggressive.” — Former Senior Commerce Editor Claire Sullivan

Revex Silicone Nose Blackhead Remover Tool Set
$8.99
This is an even cheaper blackhead spatula set that doesn’t skimp on quality. Having attained a prized “Amazon’s Choice” designation, the three-piece skin solution lives up to its retailer’s endorsement via skin-lifting side effects, an ergonomic pore cleansing brush that’s safe for everyday use, and an easy-to-clean nature (which, per the product description, “significantly reduces the risk of closed pores and inflammation caused by unclean tools”).
The spatula main event has two sides, one concave and one convex, for better aligning with the contours of your nose, applying masks, massaging the face, and chiseling the jawline… not to mention parting with your blackheads, once and for all.
What reviewers say: “This set makes pore care simple without wrecking the skin barrier. The silicone brushes are gentle yet effective, giving a clean sweep without irritation. The spatula handles stubborn blackheads with precision, leaving skin calm and clear. No harsh scraping, no redness, just balanced exfoliation that fits perfectly into a sensitive routine. My husband has one brush and I have the other.”

best classic tool
Tweezerman No-Slip Skin Care Tool
$15
If you came to this page looking for a timeless classic, Tweezerman’s your best bet. You’ll be tempted to use it casually on dry skin, but for best results — and to protect sensitive areas — it’s essential to set the groundwork with a deep cleanse and a steam (or warm compress) first, in that order. Then, proceed to apply minimal pressure as you slowly glide the blackhead-clearing tool over the skin to dislodge stubborn sebaceous filaments.
Confused on the purpose of each of the two loops? The larger one is meant for whiteheads and the smaller deals with blackheads. Make sure to sanitize the stainless steel product well, before and after each session.
Editor testing and review notes: “As someone prone to discoloration and scarring, I’ve learned that picking at my skin only worsens breakouts. This Tweezerman cult hit is a gentler alternative that I keep in my rotation for emergencies, particularly when I notice an uptick in blackheads around hard-to-reach areas (like my nostrils). With a little skin prep, it’s uncomplicated and efficient. You really can’t beat the satisfaction of seeing the blackhead in question release from its pore captor.” — Sullivan

best serum
Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant
$37
One of the most fool-proof ways to beat blackheads is to take advantage of exfoliating toners on the regular. Rather than roughing up your skin, these formulations liquefy the dead cells that trigger blackheads. Use such toners daily, and they’ll not only eliminate existing spots but also prevent future ones from surfacing. (No, you’re not dreaming.)
This Paula’s Choice Liquid Exfoliant has attained a cultish following courtesy of its texture-smoothing, dark spot–fading, and blackhead-ousting prowess. Sephora shoppers wax poetic about how it dramatically changes skin for the better, but they aren’t the only ones who do.
Dr. Mian is also a huge fan. She claims this is a wonderful salicylic acid exfoliator that gradually transforms acne-prone, combination, and even dry skin. Make sure to turn to it sparingly, patting the topical onto your face once a week after cleansing to reap all the exciting rewards.
Editor testing and review notes: “This is the best salicylic acid serum for blackheads I’ve ever tried — hands down. I have combination skin that errs more dry than oily, and I find that Paula’s Choice does an excellent job at removing dullness and dry spots on my cheeks while erasing blackheads on my nose. I’ll typically use it during the evening and follow up with a hydrating serum; this combination fully rehabs and rebalances my complexion. You’re welcome.” — Sullivan

best patches
Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Hydrocolloid Patches
$19.97
Truth: Blackheads can appear all over your face, not just on the nose. Sadly, most pore strips are only designed with the latter area in mind, but Hero Cosmetics changes the narrative with its five hydrocolloid patches in one tidy box: for your forehead, nose, chin, and cheeks. Stick them on the relevant spots before turning in for the night — only to wake up, look in the mirror, and find clearer, cleaner skin on the other side.
Editor testing and review notes: “Hero Cosmetics makes some of the best pimple patches on the market, and these blackhead-remover adhesives follow suit. Unlike competitors’ offerings, they maintain a strong hold on the skin once adhered, meaning you can easily go about your day or doze off without worrying about the patches coming undone. I’m always impressed with how quickly they uncloud my pores, particularly if I use an exfoliating serum before sticking one on.” — Sullivan

another option
TKTK Blackhead Nose Patches
$7.99
Popular, budget-friendly skin care brand TKTK has its own take on the blackhead removal trend: dual-purpose nose patches that also tighten up pores, contributing to a more youthful appearance on the whole. The furthest thing from harsh or painful, these strips unseat deeply rooted dirt and help you “say goodbye to a strawberry nose,” as TKTK puts it.
The three-step process here involves softening the sebum accumulation on your nose, clearing it with a cotton swab, and then resealing the region. You’ll be well taken care of thanks to the kit’s good-for-you ingredients like witch hazel, chamomile, and beyond.
What reviewers say: “I was pleasantly surprised by how well this two-step blackhead treatment worked. The instructions were simple to follow, and both packets contained plenty of product for one application. The first step loosened up the blackheads, and after using the pore strip, I could definitely see that it removed a good amount of buildup from my nose. The second step was a nice finishing touch, it felt soothing, helped calm my skin, and left my nose feeling hydrated instead of dry or irritated. I also liked that the treatment didn’t have an overpowering scent. My pores looked a little cleaner afterward, and my nose felt noticeably smoother.”

best peel
Shani Darden Triple Acid Signature Peel
$125
Crafted by one of Hollywood’s most in-demand estheticians (we’re talking about Shani Darden, of course), this chemical peel functions as a top-tier blackhead remover — specializing in outcomes that are anything but superficial.
The two-step facial starts with an exfoliating gel treatment that you have to paint onto skin using an included brush. Wait one minute, then follow up with the kaolin clay mask to neutralize the gel’s acids and suck debris-slash-dead skin out of your pores.
For the tasks at hand, Shani Darden employed components like congestion-clearing glycolic acid, brightening lactic and mandelic acids, plus two kinds of clay that won’t cause dryness. Slough off anything that no longer serves your complexion; afterwards, bask in its newfound glow.
Editor testing and review notes: “You should see my skin after I’ve used this two-step face mask: It’s positively glowing! You can feel the peel working when you apply the first part, which precedes a pleasant tingling sensation as you massage on the kaolin clay mask. My face always gets a nice flush after the last step (though not so red that I’m worried about irritation), so I’ll usually follow up with a cooling serum or an ice roller for a spa-like experience. The best part happens when I wake up the following morning — my pores look tighter, there’s not a blackhead in sight, and my skin looks impossibly smooth.” — Sullivan

The Different Types of Blackhead Removal Tools
Pore strips: Similar to acne patches, adhesive pore strips stick to the skin and manually pull out superficial blackheads (ones that are close to the surface) from pores. They’re typically made for the nose and chin, and all skin types can use the strips at will. “While it may be satisfying to see congestion on the pore strip after you pull it off, this is not a long-term solution to clearing blackheads,” shares Tavernise. Ideally, you should treat pore adhesives as just one step in your acne-fighting arsenal, with leave-on topicals delivering more lasting effects at the end of the day.
Exfoliating face masks: Exfoliating face masks harness chemical exfoliation and/or physical exfoliation to unclog pores and eliminate all traces of blackheads. “Exfoliating masks remove dead skin cells and aid in cellular turnover, so they are great for those with dull skin and can brighten and revive the complexion,” Tavernise says. We recommend buying ones that are suited to your specific skin type, since masks crafted for oily or acne-prone profiles can be too intense for their dry or sensitive counterparts.
Exfoliating cleansers: If you fall into the sensitive, reactive skin category, exfoliating cleansers formulated with salicylic acid are the way to go based on Dr. Landriscina’s input — tending to be less irritating than leave-on alternatives. Still, don’t forget to restore your skin’s moisture barrier with a face cream after use.
Facial tools: There’s ongoing debate among professionals regarding at-home extraction tools. For the most part, our interviewed experts are opposed to such tools (especially tweezers) in context of pulling out blackheads. If you’re still set on trying one out, though, Tavernise proposes pore vacuums, which suck out gunk from deep inside the pores. “Those with oily or combination skin and congestion in the T-zone can use a pore vacuum,” she posits. “Those with aging skin, as well as those with sensitive skin, should avoid it.” Dr. Mian urges practicing moderation with vacs irrespective of skin type, given that “excess pulling on the skin will lead to sagging or drooping over time.”
