If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission.

Our skin care routines are ever-expanding — you can find lip masks, essences, face oils, and so much more. But when you’re looking to get a potent dose of skin-loving ingredients, keep it simple with one of the best face serums.

Serums are liquid formulations that contain active ingredients to treat a number of our top skin concerns; they can soften fine lines, fade pigmentation, and zap breakouts. Serums have a thinner consistency than other skin care products like face moisturizer, but that doesn’t mean they’re not as powerful — the watery consistency actually works in your favor. That’s because a serum’s main purpose is to deliver those active ingredients deep into the skin barrier, according to board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the Shafer Clinic, Dendy Engelman. And the light consistency lets those ingredients seep in to help you achieve your skin goals.

Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment

For glowing skin, you’ll also want to focus on ingredients that will exfoliate dead skin cells, like gentle acids. “In general, exfoliating acids can help to achieve glowing skin, as they work to eliminate dead skin cells, leaving the skin radiant and glowing,” says Dr. Garshick, who suggests looking for alpha-hydroxy acids, like glycolic or lactic acid. “Salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid, can be especially helpful for those with acne-prone skin.” To get glowing skin, she recommends the Sunday Riley Good Genes All-In-One Lactic Acid Treatment because it works to exfoliate skin and improve your overall complexion by sloughing away any dullness.

Editor’s testing and review notes: “Good Genes is one of the few beauty products I always have in my Dopp kit,” says Adam Mansuroglu, Director of Commerce. “It’s an essential for anyone with dry, sensitive skin — especially during the winter season.”

What to Look For In the Best Face Serums

The Different Types of Face Serums

Are Face Serums Safe to Use?

Barring any skin conditions like eczema or rosacea, serums are generally safe to use (those with skin conditions should always ask their dermatologist before trying something new). If you have sensitive skin, do a patch test of the product on the inside of your forearm to see if you experience any adverse side effects like redness, flaking, or irritation.

Once you’ve followed those precautions, it’s all about choosing the right formula for your skin type and skin concerns so you don’t agitate your skin. For example, Dr. Engelman recommends that people with sensitive skin avoid irritating ingredients, such as retinol and strong alpha-hydroxy acids. Dr. Garshick adds that irritating ingredients might lead to more redness, dryness, and sensitivity, and if your serum causes even more problems (rather than reducing them), she says to discontinue use and just skip a serum altogether.

While you can combine certain serums, like hyaluronic acid and retinol, it’s best to start with just one serum at a time. This way, you’ll be able to slowly introduce the ingredient to your skin without causing irritation. Some stronger serums (like beta-hydroxy acids and retinol) shouldn’t be used at the same time. You can always check with your dermatologist if you have concerns about combining different treatments.

How To Apply Face Serum

Once you’ve picked the best face serum for your skin type and what skin concerns you want to treat, it’s important to know how to use it. A skin care routine generally has several steps to layer products based on the formula’s specific consistency. A good rule of thumb is to use your lightest products first and end with your heavier creams.

Serum is meant to be used after cleansing but before moisturizing, says Dr. Garshick. But if you have an essence or toner in your routine, she says to use those on first, followed by a serum, to ensure maximum penetration of the serum’s key ingredients.

Dr. Engelman recommends applying a serum to a damp face. Depending on the product’s packaging, you’ll pump out or use the dropper to put product into your hands and rub together to distribute product evenly then gently pat the product all around your face. She says to let it set for at least a minute before you apply other skin care products on top.

Serums can also be used at different points throughout the day, according to Dr. Garshick. She says that some products, like serums with vitamin C, are designed to protect skin during the day while others, like a retinol or acid-based serum, are more beneficial for a nighttime routine. Serums intended to calm or hydrate skin can work both during the day and night. When used at night, Dr. Garshick says you’ll wake up with healthy skin that looks and feels refreshed.

How We Chose the Best Face Serums

WWD has been at the forefront of covering the growing category of face serums for decades. For this story, we started by interviewing top dermatologists to fully understand what to look for in the best face serums. Using the dermatologists’ advice, we sought out the top serums for different skin concerns like acne, pigmentation, wrinkles, dullness, and dryness. We focused on serums with proven-ingredients like retinoids and hyaluronic acid, while also researching ingredients like tranexamic acid and Kakadu plum, which are relatively new to the skin care scene. For each skin concern, we made sure to include options to suit all skin types and skin tones. We also factored in packaging, price, and product size to include a range of options.
