I get excited about the newest innovations in hair care as much as the next beauty writer, and Dyson has particularly captivated my attention in recent years with its continued success — and breakthroughs — in the space. So when I got news a few months ago that the brand also responsible for engineering the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner was unveiling its lightest, smallest Supersonic hair dryer to date, I knew I had to get my hands on it. That is, I knew I had to treat my mom to it, who famously hates bulky beauty tech and was never able to find a hair dryer she could travel with: always resorting to the less-than-ideal models placed in hotel bathrooms.

The Dyson Supersonic Travel Hair Dryer, which appeared on the market in April 2026, marks the first time one of the company’s hero products — in this case the editor-loved Supersonic — has gone portable. 32 percent smaller and 25 percent lighter than its prototype, this leading hair dryer for international travel skimps on none of the original’s good-for-hair features and technological prowess. Think intelligent heat control with multiple speed and heat settings; the ability to grant a final result that’s 138 percent shinier than air-dried hair; targeted airflow delivered by the styling concentrator nozzle; protection from heat damage; and the kind of durability that “ensure[s] it can withstand even the most challenging travel scenarios,” per Dyson.

The Supersonic Travel‘s biggest selling point? That it outperforms the aforementioned standard-issue hotel hair dryer each and every time, and the proof is in the numbers. Based on a consumer test, 89 percent of respondents said their hair was healthier after using the Dyson Supersonic Travel Hair Dryer versus a hotel dryer. 94 percent, too, agree that it is more powerful than a hotel dryer, leaves you with less frizz, and is easier to take on trips than other travel blow dryers.

Not only is Dyson’s latest rollout handbag– and carry-on–friendly, but it also has universal voltage (with a 100-240V rating), meaning you can plug it into a power outlet anywhere in the world. This was particularly advantageous for my mom, who recently retired to Portugal and now doesn’t have to buy a separate European dryer for her daily hair needs.

According to its maker, the fresh arrival is also the “only travel hair dryer to enable attachment sharing with your existing Dyson Supersonic [and Supersonic Nural] hair dryer,” allowing you to snap on specialized add-ons like the Wave+Curl Diffuser, the Wide-Tooth Comb, and the Flyaway attachment for smoothing back baby hairs.

My mom’s only pet peeve regarding the tool was that it came accompanied by a single attachment unlike its full-size counterparts, though, of course, the Supersonic Travel is also significantly more affordable at $299.99 — letting you invest the difference in accessories you actually need.

On the note of intelligent heat control, the 0.7-ounce wonder measures its own temperature over 100 times a second, calibrating it with your follicles’ and scalp’s health in mind. Yes, this 2.0 Supersonic’s airflow is less forceful than that of the larger version, due to size constraints, but it’s no less reliable: also being an apt fit for your gym locker, weekend road trip tote, and even office cubicle.

The Dyson Supersonic Travel Hair Dryer was designed for all hair types and styles under the sun, whether you have thick layers, ringlet curls, or stick-straight tresses. (For context, my mom’s hair is on the thinner side, wavy, and about shoulder length; she also colors it frequently with natural henna dyes.)

Editor’s (Mom’s) Review: Dyson Supersonic Travel Hair Dryer

When I asked what her reactions were to this portable hair dryer for travel, after testing it for multiple weeks in her Portugal home, my mom shared the following thoughts: “The hair dryer is light and easy to hold. It is very quiet, and the temperatures can be easily adjusted by switching between the modes instantaneously. It takes about three to four minutes to dry my medium-length hair with the dryer, after which it feels silky and healthy.”

The pictures she sent spoke volumes. In the shots, my mom’s typically thin, dry strands (which become this way especially when exposed to salty water in the summer) are alive, voluminous, and visibly shiny — supporting Dyson’s marketing claims.

And because the Dyson is so lightweight, my tester-in-chief found it very easy to maneuver the dryer around her head — avoiding the wrist pain and clunkiness associated with heavier alternatives. This is also why the entire drying process took my mom less than five minutes each time, a major win when you’re rushing to aperetivo hour on a Euro getaway and need to get out the door ASAP.

Her final verdict? The Dyson Supersonic Travel Hair Dryer‘s convenience factor, small footprint, impressive drying speed, and prioritization of hair’s well-being make it well worth that $300 price tag. My mom isn’t ready to give up her beauty gizmo anytime soon — in fact, she’s not planning on giving it back! — and looks forward to rounding out her Dyson collection by shopping more elaborate attachments from the brand.
