“You can’t cry on a diamond’s shoulder, and diamonds won’t keep you warm at night, but they’re sure fun when the sun shines,” Elizabeth Taylor once said, illustrating her lifelong love affair with sparkly objects and penchant for engagement rings in particular (she received eight in total from her 10 fiancés).
Spanning antique diamond tiaras, ruby necklaces, emerald brooches, and gem-encrusted earrings, Taylor’s jewelry equations seemed, for the longest time, inimitable at best and inaccessible at worst: considering the baffling price tags Christie’s attached to her treasured pieces on the auction block. Taylor’s private jewelry collection, one of the most built-out and renowned in history, sold for a record-breaking $137 million in 2011, the year of her death.

On September 24, Brilliant Earth unveiled a limited-edition jewelry collaboration with the Elizabeth Taylor Estate, centered on three motifs — each of which is “inspired by a different facet of Taylor,” per the company.

This comes on the heels of Brilliant Earth becoming the official, exclusive fine jewelry partner of the estate and the brand Taylor established, House of Taylor, which oversees her name and likeness in culture, The Elizabeth Taylor Archive, and The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. A portion of proceeds from Brilliant Earth x Elizabeth Taylor will benefit said foundation, furthering Taylor’s mission to raise awareness on the condition and work towards an AIDS-free world (she was the first globally recognized celebrity to speak out against HIV/AIDS).
It’s safe to say Brilliant Earth’s just-released drop earrings, cocktail rings, huggies, and collar necklaces — all crafted using hand-selected, dazzling gemstones — align with Taylor’s maximalist-yet-thoughtful ethos when it came to her bijoux curation, while celebrating her legacy as a connoisseur in the space.
Taylor sure loved rubies, specifically those that were gifted to her by husband Mark Todd as part of a three-piece Cartier ruby and diamond suite, so she’d likely be delighted to discover the capsule’s matching halo ring, earrings, and pendant necklace trio: composed of the precious stone in question, diamonds, and 14-karat yellow gold.

Joining the above “Bold Blooms” motif is “Gilded Glamour,” which references Taylor’s diamonds and emeralds era. Her Bulgari necklace, blessed by these very materials, was a frequent favorite: presented by Richard Burton (another husband) alongside earrings and a brooch.

Last but not least, Brilliant Earth has come out with a “True Blue” accessory assortment that seeks to capture the woman of the hour at her “most joyful.” Steeped in sumptuous sapphires, the lineup nods to Taylor’s engagement ring from British actor Michael Wilding, a Bulgari sautoir Burton surprised the star with for her 40th, and other beloved jewelry box constituents.

Brilliant Earth’s latest designation is no small honor, given the fact that Taylor’s estate requires all potential partners to comply with “her exacting standards for beauty, artistry, and intention,” according to a press release. One look at the eye-catching collection, though, confirms that the founded-in-2005 jewelry destination is nothing if not a wise choice of collaborator.
“Elizabeth was a truly passionate lover of jewelry who saw herself as the temporary custodian of the gems she collected. She delighted in wearing each piece, in admiring it and telling the story behind it,” Tim Mendelson, a co-trustee of the Elizabeth Taylor Estate and her longtime executive assistant, not to mention close friend, tells WWD exclusively. “That joy comes through in our collection with Brilliant Earth. We especially appreciate that it’s designed to be worn and cherished every day, not just saved for occasions.”

Indeed, Taylor famously stated that she never treated her jewelry like “trophies.” Let this encourage you to make good use out of the Brilliant Earth arrivals, taking equally good care of them.
And this from Beth Gerstein, Brilliant Earth’s co-founder and CEO: “Elizabeth Taylor’s approach to jewelry was never just about glamour. It was about the meaning, milestones, and moments that define a life. Our hope is that [these pieces will] become part of our customers’ own milestones and memories.”
Here’s to creating new ones, accompanied by Brilliant Earth’s peerless styles and the kind of gracefulness Taylor exhibited all throughout her life.
