A significant inspiration for the skirt’s appeal is the return of ‘90s and ’00s-inspired fashion, think — oversized shoulder bags, white tank tops, baggy jeans, and adidas Samba sneakers. “As we transition from fall into winter, we’ve been seeing skirts have their moment,” says Kate Rockwell, Senior Vintage Buying Manager at Reformation. “The ’90s and Y2K denim and cargo silhouettes are making a comeback in a huge way along with those heavier knit plaids, and shoppers always love a more classic, minimalistic silk slip style.”

This fall saw a range of midi skirts, inspired by decades ago, take over the runways — in leather, silk, and denim. “With the rise of the Gen-Z grunge aesthetic, a lot of celebrities and influencers have been hopping on the trend,” says Rockwell. She adds that celebrity influence has been a big draw in steering the direction of the midi trend this season. “Bella Hadid specifically has been wearing a ton of midi skirts this year, and she really knows how to rock the look. Whether she styles it with basic tops, baby doll tees, or accessories such as sporty sunglasses, she makes it look edgy and ultra chic.” To follow in Hadid’s footsteps, look to styles like cargo skirts or sporty nylon styles.

If the vintage aesthetic isn’t for you, there are also plenty of more classic takes on the silhouette to try. A sleek slip skirt and embellished style are modern and playful, especially appropriate for the holiday season. Knit or cotton pencil skirts are other streamlined choices you can easily dress up or down. Somewhere between trendy and classic is the denim skirt, which has also seen a resurgence thanks partly to the rise of western-inspired styles on the runway for Fall/Winter 2022. Though you can easily lean into the aesthetic by way of fringe or suede, a denim skirt can also serve as a minimalist addition to a simple work wardrobe.

The midi skirt is not only universally flattering but also boasts the kind of wear-with-anything appeal that makes it a year-round styling essential. Whether you’re going to a wedding, a casual dinner, or to the office, the skirt has no limits. It’s an adaptable essential that’s versatile and suits all occasions.

Midi Skirts for Casual Occasions: Midi skirts are versatile — easy to dress up or down, thanks to their in-between length. “If you’re going for a more casual look, I’d recommend pairing your midi skirt with a T-shirt or vest,” says Rockwell. “Tie it together with a pair of sporty sneakers or mary-janes. The final effect is classic and casual, with comfort leading the way. Lastly, for occasions like brunch with friends or a date night, balance out a flashy top or low-cut camisole with a midi skirt. It will look dressier than women’s jeans, but it won’t feel too formal or stuffy.”

Midi Skirts for Formal Occasions: “For a more formal occasion, I love pairing my midi skirts with a chunky sweater and knee-high boots,” suggests Rockwell. Then, “accessorizing with some fun vintage jewelry pieces to bring it to that next level.” You can also try dressing up a more formal midi skirt with a pair of sleek heels, like a pointed pair of Mach & Mach pumps.

Midi Skirts for the Office: If you’re eager to make the trend work for the office, try using a midi skirt instead of trousers. French tuck a button-down into your skirt for a relaxed-but-polished look or with a colorful cardigan set for something with a bit more punch. A knee-length skirt also is great for pairing with an oversized blazer for a refined spin on model-off-duty style and, of course, a tote bag or work bag.
