Move over, beige trench coat; step aside, barn jacket. The new cool kid on the fall outerwear block is, refreshingly, a color-happy windbreaker.
Fall 2026 runways called it early — blending the athletic with the utilitarian and charming in collections from sartorial giants such as Loewe — and all we had to do was listen. Celebrities, it’s safe to say, hopped on board first, with names like Tyla, J. Law, Hailey Bieber, and Charlie XCX showing off their color-blocked, oftentimes-cropped jackets over the past year in context of quirky pairings (think lace-trimmed silk shorts and sharp-heeled stilettos).

The Best Gold Necklaces for Women to Wear This Fall
Mark our words: Whether clad in zippers or buttons, the runway-vetted windbreaker is only going to continue popping up on streets worldwide, as summer transitions into fall and wet weather replaces the dry heat of yore. From the drawstring-equipped to the hooded and Paddington-inspired, the humble rain coat will also be taking on increasingly personality-rich manifestations as fashion insiders resume experimenting with the item’s colorways, proportions, and materials.

That being said, for a vivid windbreaker to become a truly integral part of your autumnal wardrobe, it has to serve a pragmatic function: keeping you safe from the rain with a water-resitant coating and simplifying your day-to-day with features like packability, pockets, thermoregulation, and adjustability for a just-right fit.
Fortunately, labels both affordable and luxury are coming out with new takes on this trend like clockwork, saturating the market with colorful jackets for every personal aesthetic and practical need under the sun (or, more accurately, the rain).
Our eagle-eyed editors have identified seven of the most worth-it buys in this category — guaranteeing dryness and stylishness through fall and beyond. (Add an umbrella and some wellies to cart while you’re at it.)
best overall
Nike Sportswear Women’s Oversized Repel Windbreaker
$75
Voluminous and made for layering, Nike’s Oversized Repel Windbreaker doesn’t shy away from attention-grabbing flair while still keeping things down-to-earth with a woven fabric that collects water on its surface versus letting it seep inside. We love the piece’s contrasting piping, embroidered Swoosh logo on the chest, and royal blue hue.
If Barbie‘s on your vision board for the upcoming months, though, be sure to score the jacket in the coquettish Pink Rise iteration.
most sustainable
Coach Restored Lightweight Windbreaker
$295
Not only is this Coach rain jacket a looker and a half, but it was also born out of the label’s Repair Workshop — “lovingly restored to its original condition,” according to Coach, so as to help reduce the industry’s environmental impact and eliminate waste. It doesn’t hurt that vintage activewear is all the rage right now, too, since the product reads retro-coded in the best of ways and will go well with everything from your baggy, slightly faded denim to a track pant in a complementary shade.
Lightweight and high-coverage with its stand collar and attached hood, the jacket boasts button-secured pockets that can house your phone, digital cam (think vintage, after all), and other daily tchotchkes.
chicest look
Aligne Rain Popover Track Top
$215
Contemporary British fashion brand Aligne has never done us wrong, and its Rain Popover Track Top is further confirmation of the sentiment. Selling for a bit over $200 at Nordstrom, the pullover is worth every penny, what with its trendy half-zip closure, playful kangaroo pocket, recycled-fiber composition, and textural, elasticized cuffs for shutting out the elements. A minty green color is the cherry on top of it all, and you can toy with how the jacket sits on your bod courtesy of those white strings at bottom.
Your closet’s maxi skirts and transitional-weather capri pants won’t know what hit ’em.
best new arrival
Lululemon Half-Zip Tennis Pullover
$168
If fashion choices speak louder than words, then the volume on this new-but-already-trending Lululemon arrival is turned all the way up. The color-blocked, abstract selection might be best suited for on-court outfit equations, but it’s just as ready to be at your beck and call post-practice — featuring an exaggerated fit, a water-averse and UV-protective fabric (with a UPF 40+ rating), a subtly crinkly exterior, and even a hidden card sleeve for remaining put-together in every setting.
We seriously can’t get over the inclusion of that jewel-toned raspberry coloring. Go ahead and wear it with a matching lippie, perhaps, or Lulu’s RePleat High-Rise Tennis Skirt in the same hue.
best set
Yisfri Women’s Two-Piece Tracksuit Set
$32.99
The beauty of this under-$40 Amazon buy lies in the fact that it’s a two-piece set (sold with a cropped jacket and shorts). Even better? Said jacket is short-sleeved, making it a godsend for fashionistas living in warmer climates or those who want to repurpose the purchase for their “aerobics instructor in the ’80s” Halloween costume this year.
Airy, relaxed, saturated, and resembling its online photos to a tee, the wallet-friendly duo is consistently praised by reviewers for having “comfort value” and compliment-generating powers.
most packable
Brooks Canopy Packable Jacket
$78 $140 44% off
Brooks is best known for its (literally) record-breaking footwear, sure, but the quality of its apparel line also cannot be overstated. This Canopy Packable Jacket aces the neon windbreaker trend by shielding wearers from light rains and winds alike during runs — to the finish line, to the grocery store, or otherwise — and flaunting an allover magenta colorway that’s nothing if not eye-catching.
We appreciate the item’s semi-fitted nature, meaning it aligns with your curves while still granting ample room for movement. UPF 50+ sun protection, a partially recycled makeup, and the ability to fold into its own hand pocket similarly position the Canopy as a wise, and not just style-forward, investment.
most high-end
Canada Goose Axis Lightweight Jacket
$595
No one does extreme-weather gear quite like Canada Goose, and the company’s Axis Lightweight Jacket is proof that you don’t need to sacrifice good taste for technical excellence. The modern, funnel-necked fan favorite is ideal for temperatures between 41°F and 23°F, has velcro-adjustable cuffs plus an internal security pocket, and is crafted out of two-layer recycled nylon that will finally make the saying “like water off a duck’s back” applicable to your life.
Nodding to the windbreakers of the ’90s, the luxury Axis dazzles with a lilac shade that will come in handy for spring 2027, as well. Planning ahead has never looked cooler.
