Sneakers have, for the most part, outrun their sporting origins, becoming more of a fashion statement than a performance-optimized necessity. Running shoes utilized as sartorial staples gained momentum in the 1950s, when relaxed school dress codes and a growing appetite for leisure helped push rubber-soled kicks beyond the running track and into everyday wardrobes. Hollywood, naturally, also cemented their style credentials.

Marilyn Monroe made the case for off-duty sneaker pairings when she was photographed wearing canvas Keds on the set of “Clash by Night” in 1952. Three years later, James Dean reinforced sneakers’ lifestyle appeal in a photograph taken on the set of “Giant,” donning Jack Purcell tennis shoes.

Today, retro-inspired running shoes successfully bring together nostalgic silhouettes and contemporary footwear technology. The challenge? Finding a pair that delivers attractive looks without sacrificing the cushioning, support, and overall performance needed for the activity in question.

We identified seven selects that revisit everything from the streamlined steppers of the 1970s to the metallic, retro-futuristic designs of the early 2000s. A guarantee: They’ll fuel your every step, whether you’re engaging in actual running or that of the errand kind, while powering your fashion equations this fall.
New Balance
FULL-LENGTH CUSHIONING
New Balance Made in UK 991v2 Vintage Sports Shoe
$269.99
New Balance’s Made in UK 991v2 Vintage Sports model takes a page from classic tennis attire, spicing things up with burnt-orange suede and breathable, textural mesh for a retro-coded final look. But this sneaker is more than what first meets the eye. Its full-length midsole cushioning softens the impact of each footfall, while additional underfoot reinforcement keeps feet feeling fresh.
Salomon
BEST FOR UNEVEN TERRAIN
Salomon XT-Whisper Shoe
$145
According to Salomon, the 2010s are officially old enough to be retro, and the XT-Whisper fully supports this era’s revival. Its layered, mixed-media upper, sculpturality, and wavy detailing replicate the decade’s aesthetic to a tee. What’s more, the shoe features EnergyCell cushioning, an OrthoLite insole, and a Quicklace system for a secure fit. Deep, multidirectional lugs grant grip on loose and uneven terrain, making this selection a trail-oriented option.
GRAVEL-TO-ROAD
Hoka Huaka Pro Sneaker
$140
The Huaka Pro refreshes Hoka’s performance archives with a distinctly Y2K sensibility. Its vivid graphics, painted midsole, and translucent cage bring early millennium sportswear into the present. Originally conceived as a gravel-to-road trainer, the shoe retains a lightweight construction and sturdy rubber outsole (engineered to provide traction on urban surfaces). Hoka markets this style primarily for lifestyle wear, but its airy feel and inherent durability make it a solid choice for casual runs and lighter workouts, too.
Brooks
UPDATED FROM THE ’70s
Brooks Vanguard Shoe
$130
First unveiled in 1976, Brooks’ Vanguard sends wearers back to a time when running shoes were in the midst of developing a unique visual identity outside of the track. Suede accents and throwback colorways preserve its ’70s character, while a modern DNA Loft midsole infuses the heritage profile with forgiving cushioning. We particularly love the shoe’s reliable grip on pavements.
PERFORMANCE-FOCUSED
Asics Gel-1130 Shoe
$110
The Asics Gel-1130 looks like it time-traveled to 2026 from the early aughts: especially in its pink iteration, which evokes the trainers worn by me and seemingly every other girl in my orbit circa 2002. Fortunately, the appeal transcends mere nostalgia. A Heel Gel innovation eliminates shock, an EVA midsole supplies ample padding, and the Trusstic support system adds stability. Seven other colors available online offer subdued alternatives to the more playful hue pictured above.
Nike
ANKLE SUPPORT
Nike V5 RNR Sneaker
$95
With metallic touches, a dimensional Swoosh logo, and a substantial yet never-burdensome foam midsole, Nike’s V5 RNR captures the unapologetic activewear approach of the early 2000s. Its thermoregulating mesh upper is overlaid with synthetic leather, and a plush collar up top establishes targeted comfort around the ankle. A rubber outsole with era-appropriate grooves, meanwhile, maintains traction amidst every kind of movement — from the work commute to the laidback weekend jaunt.
New Balance
EDITOR-WORN
New Balance 530 Sneaker
$109.99
As a jogger with two left feet, I’m very particular about buying running shoes that can prop them up while giving my toes a chance to spread out. I searched high and low for a pair with enough room for my insoles, too, and this one doles out exactly the fit I so craved — also being quite stylish and transitioning easily across occasions (yes, including travel days).
In the past few years, I’ve matched the 530 to workout onesies, faux-fur coats, and everything in between. The sneaker’s segmented Abzorb midsole makes for a plush ride, and the perforated upper promotes airflow: banishing sweat during more intense pursuits.
