Some shoes are destined for a single season. Others become part of fashion history. Valentino Garavani’s Rockstud falls firmly into the latter category, having outlasted countless footwear trends, from chunky dad sneakers to barely-there heels. And with fashion’s renewed appetite for statement accessories and early 2010s nostalgia, those unmistakable pyramid studs are looking particularly relevant again.
First introduced in 2010 under then-creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, the Rockstud took Valentino’s romantic design language and gave it an unexpected edge. Pointed toes, delicate straps, and pyramid-shaped studs quickly became a favorite among celebrities and fashion insiders, turning the shoes into one of the decade’s most recognizable luxury accessories.

More than 15 years later, the appeal goes beyond nostalgia. The Rockstud has evolved through new silhouettes and interpretations, proving that a fashion icon doesn’t necessarily need a complete reinvention to remain relevant.
From strappy stilettos to understated ballet flats, the Valentino Garavani Rockstud collection offers several ways to revisit the house’s signature design.
The History Behind the House
Of course, Valentino’s story began long before the first Rockstud hit the runway. Founded in Rome in 1960 by Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti, the Italian fashion house built its reputation on couture craftsmanship, romantic silhouettes, and its unmistakable shade of red.

By 1968, Valentino had introduced its celebrated White Collection, while Jacqueline Kennedy’s decision to wear the designer for her wedding to Aristotle Onassis further cemented the house’s international reputation.
Behind the iconic red gowns, celebrity clientele, and runway-defining moments is a fashion house with more than six decades of history. Take a closer look at the people, designs, and milestones that made Valentino a defining name in Italian luxury.
A Front-Row Look at Valentino
The Rockstud may have become a fashion fixture, but Valentino’s runway collections have never stood still. Under creative director Alessandro Michele, the house continues to revisit its archives while experimenting with proportion, embellishment, and its established design codes.

For a closer look at how those ideas translate from season to season, Valentino’s fashion show archive offers a front-row view of its ready-to-wear and haute couture collections.
As for the Rockstud, its appeal remains remarkably simple: Few shoes can make a statement without requiring much else from an outfit. Pair the flats with relaxed denim, let the pumps sharpen a tailored suit, or save the strappy heels for an evening out. More than a decade later, those signature studs still know how to command attention.

From the pointed-toe pumps that helped make the Rockstud famous to modern flats and strappy heels, check out the designs that continue to give Valentino’s signature studs their staying power.
A Shorter Heel
Valentino Rockstud Court Shoes In Kid Leather 40mm

The original Rockstud’s architectural appeal remains intact, but a lower 40mm heel gives these kidskin leather pumps a more versatile proposition for daytime dressing.

Valentino Rockstud Kidskin Ballerinas

Ballet flats have come a long way from their dainty beginnings, and Valentino’s Rockstud version is proof. Crafted from black kidskin leather, the Italian-made pair trades traditional bows for pyramid-studded straps and a metallic toe cap.
Best Fall Heels
Valentino Rockstud Suede Pumps 100mm

Chocolate brown has become a compelling alternative to black, especially when suede enters the picture. Valentino’s Rockstud pumps combine the rich neutral with adjustable studded straps and a 100mm heel that works beautifully with tonal dressing.
Polished & Chic
Valentino Rockstud Pumps In Woven Fabric 100mm
$1,250
A departure from the usual leather and suede, this woven Rockstud pump brings an almost artisanal quality to Valentino’s famous silhouette. The multicolored textile and 100mm heel make it especially compelling for shoppers who appreciate a bit of texture.
Most Comfortable
Valentino Mary-Jane Rockstud Nappa Ballerina 05 mm

Butter yellow isn’t just for spring wardrobes. These Italian-made nappa leather flats bring the soft shade into year-round rotation, with contrasting calfskin piping and platinum-finish studs adding definition.
Easy to Style
Valentino Patent Rockstud Ballet Flat
$950
Pink patent leather could easily veer too sweet, but Valentino knows how to balance it. The pointed-toe silhouette and platinum-finish studs give these Italian-made ballerinas a sharper finish.
Best Designer Mules
Valentino Rockstud Slide Sandal In Suede 60mm
$950
The minimalist mule gets the Valentino treatment in rich Ebony suede. With an easy slip-on design and the house’s signature studs, these sandals would look just as good with linen trousers as they would with a silk slip dress.
Best Designer Sandals
Valentino Rockstud Flat Calfskin Sandal With Straps
$990
The appeal is in the color pairing: warm Almond calfskin, blush nappa leather, and polished studs that give an otherwise simple sandal some character. Better yet, they’re just as suited to a seaside getaway as they are to summer in the city.
Beyond the Runway: Valentino’s Approach to Sustainability
There’s more to luxury fashion than what ends up in your wardrobe. Beyond its couture collections and signature accessories, Valentino has also outlined its approach to responsible sourcing, environmental impact, and social responsibility. The house’s sustainability initiatives offer a closer look at the commitments shaping its operations and the future of the brand.

EXPLORE VALENTINO’S SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES
After all, if the Rockstud has taught us anything, it’s that great design can have a life well beyond a single season. And for a house built on decades of craftsmanship, what comes next matters just as much as what came before.
